The Carolina Special Cresting Saluda Mountain
Print of Oil Painting by Howard Fogg Select image to view larger.
The epitome of dramatic North American railroading was the cresting of Saluda by Southern Railway’s Carolina Special, powered by a green and gold trimmed Mountain type locomotive with an assist from a Mallet Helper on the rear.
This train, which ran from Charleston to Cincinnati, was a typical passenger train of the steam era. It consisted of mail and baggage cars, coaches, a diner and Pullmans. It once boasted an observation car proudly marked “Carolina Special.” It was not a fast train. However, when one considers the rugged and diverse country through which it ran, it must be ranked as one of the most utilitarian and colorful passenger trains that ever served the South.
This oil painting by Howard Fogg, commissioned by Frank Fishburne, shows the most dramatic phase of the Carolina Special’s journey: climbing the nation’s steepest standard gauge main line rails up Saluda Mountain, with grades reaching 5.3%. The Carolina Special ran for over half a century and was one of the nation’s longest-lived passenger trains. It started in 1911 and endured until its last trip up Saluda on December 5, 1968. Limited quantities available. Proceeds will go to Saluda’s Historic City Hall Restoration and Oral History Project.
